1 KLEINFELDER
five-foot intervals for lithologic classification. Samples will be collected by advancing the
boring to a point immediately above the desired sampling depth and then driving (vertical
borings) or pushing (slant borings) a 2-inch diameter Modified California Split-Spoon Sampler,
lined with three 6-inch long brass tubes, into the undisturbed soil. The sampler is then removed
from the bottom of the boring. The ends of the bottom (third) tube are covered with Teflon and
sealed with tight fitting plastic caps. The borings will be logged by an experienced Kleinfelder
geologist. Lithologic classification will be based on the Unified Soil Classification System
(USCS).
After the samples are collected, they will be individually labeled with the job number, the sample
date and time, the employee number of the individual who performed the sampling, and a unique
sample identification number. After labeling, the samples will be immediately stored in an iced
cooler for transport to Kleinfelder sample storage under chain-of-custody control. At this time,
analysis of soil samples from the shallow borings is not anticipated.
3.2.2 Deep Borings
The two (2) deep soil borings located at the one million gallon storage pond and proposed 72
million gallon storage pond areas will be advanced to a maximum depth of 200 to 250 feet below
the ground surface or until groundwater is encountered. Kleinfelder anticipates that groundwater
will be encountered at a depth near 200 feet. If groundwater is not encountered above a depth of
250 feet the boring will be terminated. Perched groundwater may be encountered at shallower
depths. If encountered, perched groundwater will be sampled. Samples of the underlying
aquitard collected and the boring terminated If deeper borings are desired by the RWQCB or if
difficult drilling conditions are encountered in the deep borings, alternative drilling methods may
be required.
The soil borings will be drilled with a truck mounted drill rig equipped with 10-inch hollow stem
augers. Hollow stem auger was selected over mud rotary drilling methods in order to obtain the
most undisturbed sample of aquitard material and to avoid introducing drilling fluids to the
formation. Soil samples will be collected every five feet for lithologic classification and
potential analysis. Samples will be collected by advancing the boring to a point immediately
above the desired sampling depth and then driving (vertical borings) or pushing (slant borings) a
2-inch diameter Modified California Split-Spoon Sampler, lined with three 6-inch long brass
tubes, into the undisturbed soil. The sampler is then removed from the bottom of the boring.
20-2594-03.WP21201 IR002 Page 5 of 12
Copyright 2000 Kleinfelder,Inc. December 29,2000
