Kennedy/Jenks
nnedy/Jenks Consultants
Section 5: Soil Sampling and Analysis Plan
This section describes the proposed sampling locations and procedures for soil sampling
beneath and around the 1-MG pond. The intent of the proposed sampling and analysis is to
collect sufficient information to characterize the shallow soils beneath the 1-MG pond and
characterize the nature and extent of any wastewater constituents in soil beneath the pond.
5.1 Field Preparation
Prior to initiating field activities an underground utility clearance will be performed by contacting
Underground Service Alert. A Health and Safety Plan will be developed and followed by the firm
responsible for performing the soil sampling. Due to the potential presence of subsurface mud,
which may present a slip and fall threat, the floor of the pond is anticipated to be one of the
anticipated physical hazards during collection of soil samples.
San Joaquin County Environmental Health requires permits for exploratory borings greater than
3 feet deep, and therefore, appropriate boring permits will be obtained prior to initiating the
planned soil sampling activities.
5.2 Pond Preparation
In preparation for soil sampling beneath the 1-MG pond, water stored in the pond will be
removed using an appropriate method, such as pumping. The pond area will then be allowed to
dry, which may take up to one month.
Musco personnel anticipate that due to repeated dredging, the walls of the pond will be steeply
sloped, if not vertical. As noted above, despite the planned several weeks of drying, it is also
possible that subsurface mud will be present beneath the pond floor. For these reasons,
collection of the soil samples will be performed using a hand auger.
5.3 Soil Sampling Locations - 1-MG Pond
It is proposed that soil samples will be collected from four locations within the perimeter of the
(drained and dried) 1-MG pond. Four sample locations are expected to provide a sufficient
representation of concentrations of constituents of interest in the shallow soil below the pond.
The proposed soil sampling locations are shown in Figure 4. These locations will be designated
as P1, P2, P3 and P4, with the "P" indicating a within-pond sample.
Because it is unknown if, and to what extent, shallow soils below the 1-MG pond have been
impacted by wastewater constituents, and because the drained bottom of the pond may not
initially allow access by a drilling rig, a phased approach will be utilized in collection of soil
samples. If results from the initial soil samples indicate that unacceptable concentrations of
constituents of interest are present in soils beneath the 1-MG pond, then additional soil
sampling locations may later be proposed downgradient of the 1-MG pond to characterize the
lateral extent of possible chemical impact.
Work Plan for Soil Characterization, Page 7
Musco Family Olive Company, Tracy, California
9'imuWAzdmin icb'.0'u20Oh.m,5caol'ne04ieGa'alcla,zc1mpwd.w fylnyat.dM
