MAINTENANCE HAZARDOUS WASTE MANUAL
Chapter 2
Page 13
F. Manufacturers original containers that are now empty must be labeled
"empty"and dated. For example:
1. empty drums
2. caustic soap containers
3. petroleum products
4. paints
5. similar original containers
These are the labeling requirements during the storage of hazardous waste. A sample of
the required label is shown in Appendix A: Hazardous Waste Label, Storage and
Disposal. Examples of completed labels are located in Appendix A, Hazardous Waste
Label, Storage, and Disposal. For transportation, the label requirements are more
complex and your contractor will supply the needed labels. The contractor shall also
supply proper U.N. and/or N.A. numbers and any other information needed for shipping.
2.02 Storage Containers
The containers used to store hazardous waste are an important safe guard for employees
and the environment. The following regulatory requirements and Caltrans guidelines
for hazardous waste containers will be followed:
A. Containers must meet Department of Transportation(DOT)requirements for
transportation on highways. (Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations). Containers
used to transport or store hazardous waste must be free of leaks and undamaged.
B. Hazardous waste must be placed into compatible containers. (For example:
corrosives must be placed into polyethylene type drums; solvents must be placed
into steel drums). The container shall be made of/or lined with material that will
not react with the hazardous waste stored in it.
C. Containers used to store hazardous waste shall be in good condition. If a
container is not in good condition(e.g.: severe rusting, apparent structural
defects), or if it begins to leak, the material shall be transferred immediately to
another compatible container. The old container as well as the spillage will be
handled as a waste.
D. Different wastes shall not be placed into the same container. Mixing of different
types of waste may result in a chemical reaction or other undesirable results.
Before any unknown waste is combined, contact your DHM for help. Disposal
sites may not accept mixed waste even if it is compatible, which will cause
higher disposal costs.
July 2018
