MAINTENANCE HAZARDOUS WASTE MANUAL
Chapter 2
Page 12
2.00 Hazardous Waste Storage and Signage
When storing hazardous waste, Caltrans falls under the requirements of the
Hazardous Waste Control Laws.
2.01 Accumulation Period
A. The storage of hazardous waste will be for no longer than 90 days. State
law mandates extremely detailed storage and training regulations. This
includes secondary containment, fenced and locked storage areas inside
our maintenance areas, posting of warning signs, and training programs
for all employees.
B. Normally the storage area will be in a fully fenced maintenance station.
Additional fencing around the hazardous waste is required when the
hazardous waste is stored for more than 90 days.
C. There are exceptions to the 90-day storage rule. Hazardous waste can be
accumulated for a period of one year from the date of original
accumulation if the total quantity does not exceed 55 gallons. For
information or clarification for the use of this and other limited exceptions,
contact your District Hazmat Manager(DHM).
CONTAINER LABELING
One of the most important phases of hazardous waste management is identification and
labeling. The law requires that a label is placed on all hazardous waste containers and
these labels shall be filled in legibly and accurately. It is a misdemeanor to make a
false statement on a label, manifest, or any other hazardous waste record. These labels
shall include the following information:
A. The contents of the container(e.g.: used motor oil, paint thinner, gasoline,
contaminated soil, drop inlet soil/waste, etc.).
B. The physical state of the contents (e.g.: solid, liquid, gas).
C. The name, address and Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) number,
company(Caltrans) and location generating the waste.
D. Statements, which call attention to the particular hazardous properties of the waste
(e.g.: Ignitable, reactive, corrosive and toxic. etc.).
E. The (accumulation start)date on which the waste was first placed in the container.
July 2018
