MAINTENANCE HAZARDOUS WASTE MANUAL
Chapter 2
Paze 21
2.03 Management of Specialized Materials
A. Waste Oil Management
1. "Waste oil" is any oil that has been refined from petroleum crude oil and has
been used and/or contaminated.
2. Most of the Caltrans generated waste oil is recyclable and should be so handled.
3. Do not add solvents, antifreeze or any other waste to the waste oil. This could
prevent it from being recycled.
B. Management of UNIVERSAL WASTE.
The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has found that all lighting
tubes, batteries, lamps, CRT's and electronic devices shall be managed as
Universal waste due to the presence of mercury and other potentially hazardous
materials in them. These items should be collected, stored, and labeled as
UNIVERSAL WASTE. See label examples Page 70-72.
DTSC regulations stipulate a maximum of one year storage period. Each District's
Self -Generated Waste Disposal contractor should be directed to pick up items well
before this limit.
July 2018
