MAINTENANCE HAZARDOUS WASTE MANUAL
Chapter 2
Page 24
2.05 Housekeeping Requirements.
To simplify the process of inspections and to maintain legal compliance, hazardous
waste containers need to be stored or handled as follows:
A. An area of the maintenance station shall to be designated as the hazardous waste
storage area and maintained to meet all laws and regulations.
B. Hazardous waste shall be stored in such a way that a simple visual inspection
would reveal any problems (i.e.: being able to walk around containers for the
weekly inspection).
C. The hazardous waste storage area shall be kept clean of other wastes that are non-
hazardous (i.e.: freeway trash, leaves from trees etc.).
D. Use only DOT approved containers. Remove the "original" product labels on
containers that are to be re -used to store hazardous waste. Use only an approved
hazardous waste label. Where sun fading of the label is a problem, use a grease
pencil or spray paint to note the accident number or other identifying number on
the drum. This will help with tracking and renewing labels as needed.
E. Spills of hazardous waste (Caltrans generated waste) shall be handled the same as
spills of hazardous materials on the highway. Use the SDS to identify the
hazards of handling the spilled waste and use personal protective equipment
(PPE) as required. Proceed as instructed in the District Hazardous Materials Spill
Contingency Plan. Make all proper notifications.
F. Hazardous waste shall be handled properly. It must not be allowed to enter storm
drains, streams, and ground water systems. Never dump hazardous waste on the
ground or into wash racks.
July 2018
