Me SPECIFIC PROCEDURES FOR SPILLS 1 Specified procedures for response to a spill are outlined ` below. These guidelines provide instructions to be followed at the employee, supervisor, and management level and estab- lish a line of communication to the Environmental Coordina- tor and other emergency response teams. Upon discovery of a spill of any amount, the following actions are required: 1. Determine if the spill is of a hazardous nature. 2. Notify the Emergency Coordinator immediately by radio or telephone (if Emergency Coordinator is not readily available, notify your supervisor) giving the following information: o Time of the spill o Location of the spill including type of terrain ...and nearest, waters or drains o Amount of spill and type of device involved o Existing weather conditions . o Measures taken to control the spill (In case the supervisor is being' notified he will pass the above information to one of -.the .Emergency Coordi- nators who is readily available. ), If the employee. discovering the spill is unprepared or untrained to effectively deal with containing the spill, he should use caution and. good judgement as to his personal role in the containment of the spill until the trained cleanup crew arrives. . However, immediate containment by the discovering employee can signifi- cantly reduce the extent of damage. In the event that the employee has elected to apply containment before the cleanup crew arrives, he should be given instruc- . tions for decontamination equipment and clothing should also be collected and disposed of in an ' authorized manner. 3. . The Emergency Coordinator will: Report immediately any hazardous spill that can, may, or does become waterborne to the hazardous Environ- mental Coordinator. - The information to be reported is: o Location of the spill and waters involved X-14
