00 f
FIELD ASSESSMENT
A. General Description of the Tank System — The tank system includes a 5'-3" +/
diameter, 18'-6" +/- long horizontal welded double wall steel tank set in saddles. New
oil is kept in the east inner tank 5 -feet in diameter by 9 -feet +/- long and pumped via
small diameter, low pressure hoses into the shop for use. Used oil removed from the
truck engine is pumped into the west inner tank approximately 5 -feet +/- in diameter by
9 -feet +/- long using small diameter, low pressure hoses. The Owner processes
approximately 2,000 gallons oil per month (see the photographs in Appendix `A'). The
tank system includes the following.
1. Tank East End — A 2 -inch nominal standard pipe riser with gauge for the double
tank space demonstrated there is no leakage from the inner tanks nor excess
condensation. The removal of the gauge allows the space to be pumped empty if
leakage did occur.
2. Tank West End — The west end has a grounding cable to the building.
3. Tank Shell
a. There are two 18 -inch diameter bolted access covers (one at each end of
each inner tank).
b. There are a number of vents and nominal standard pipe fittings, pipe caps
and pump equipment.
C. The flow is very slow and fluid level sensors indicate tank capacities.
B. Detailed Description
1. Tank Configuration — The tank was fabricated December 1999 as a secondary
containment vessel per UL142 and STIF921. The outer shell volume without the
inner tanks is approximately 3,000 +/- (two 1,500 gallon +/- internal tanks) for the
horizontal welded steel tank. There are two (2) structural steel saddles supported
by 3 to 4 -inches of A/C paving over 6 to 8 -inches of compacted aggregate base.
2. Design and Evaluation Standards — ASCE Standard 7-05, 2007 CBC and STIF921
and API 650.
3. Material
a. ASTM A36 steel at tank shell and tank ends.
El 1-008
b. E70XX partial grooved butt welds at least 1/4 -inch or larger.
C. ASTM A53 Grade B pipe or ASTM A501 at pipe systems
III
Field Observations
