VCVSHeatth
Ms. Florido
November 2, 2018
Page 7
tedious, ever-changing process of working with manufacturers regarding credit and handling the
pharmaceuticals in accordance with manufacturer instruction. The process is simply too
complex to manage at the retail store level.
S ip 11 Kit
Item# 303 relates to maintaining a spill control materials in the hazardous waste area,
specifically absorbent. As a background, CVS's waste management program requires all retail
stores to maintain a spill kit in the hazardous waste management area of the store. The kit
includes various items, such as absorbent, safety goggles, apron, gloves, plastic dust pan, a
broom and paper towels. We have received confirmation that store 3908 now has the absorbent
in place.
Container Closure
Your item#403 relates to keeping hazardous waste containers closed. The CVS
Hazardous Waste Program has been specifically designed to ensure the proper container
management, while meeting the unique challenges of collecting and storing hazardous wastes for
proper disposal in a space-constrained retail setting. The heavy-duty plastic totes with sealing
lids must be kept closed all times when not adding or removing waste. To address your concern
reinforcement training has been provided to store personnel on proper container management to
ensure hazardous waste container closure when not adding or removing waste. Also, on October
10, 2018 Chris Yerzy retrained store colleagues on the hazardous waste program, including the
importance of proper container management to ensure hazardous waste container closure when
not adding or removing waste.
Please note that all the hazardous waste totes and processed damages observed during
your inspection were removed by Stericycle during the last hazardous waste pickup performed
on October 10, 2018 (Manifests attached).
Weekly Inspections
Your item#404 relates to conducting and documenting weekly inspections of hazardous
waste container storage areas. As background, CVS's hazardous waste management program
requires each retail store to conduct and properly document inspections of all hazardous waste
storage areas on a weekly basis. The program also requires that retail stores maintain paper
copies of completed weekly inspection logs in the store's EH&S binder for at least three
years. Please note that in May 2018, CVS launched the electronic weekly inspection logs for all
retail locations, which notifies and requires stores on a weekly basis to inspect hazardous waste
areas. Completion of these logs is tracked by the Store Operations. Attached please find copies
of the weekly inspection logs after your inspection on Sep 25, 2018. We have emphasized to
store management the requirement that the store conduct, accurately document, and perform any
corrective action during each weekly inspection.
C" pharmacy/caremark/minute clinic / specialty
