Program Specifications
Hazardous All areas of a CVS/pharmacy retail store (Front Store, Photo and Pharmacy)
Waste may generate waste items through normal business operations that are
Generation regulated as hazardous waste under state or federal law. These items
cannot go into the trash/dumpster or down the drain. Therefore, these
items must be handled using the StrongPak hazardous waste collection
system in accordance with the CVS/pharmacy Hazardous Waste
Management Program for Retail Stores.
CVS/pharmacy employs a "reverse distribution" process to return select
unsold, damaged, returned or expired goods to the distribution center (DC)
for remarketing, redistribution or return of products to the manufacturer.
CVS/pharmacy scanning guns indicate when an item can be returned to the
DC. However, keep in mind that even items that can be returned to the DC
as indicated by the scanning gun must not be transported if they are leaking
or otherwise unsafe to transport as indicated on the "Do Not Ship" guidance
provided in your Front Store training course (i.e. leaking, about to leak,
partially full, missing its nozzle, has a missing or broken cap, or is crushed or
damaged).
It is very important to make sure that waste items that could be
considered hazardous are not combined with the unsold or expired
products shipped to the DC. Failure to identify, segregate and manage
these items as hazardous waste could be a violation of federal or state
regulations.
All items that cannot be returned to the DC and have been determined to
be hazardous waste must be segregated at the store and picked up by a
licensed hazardous waste vendor for transportation to a licensed disposal
facility. CVS/pharmacy has contracted with StrongPak, a licensed hazardous
waste management company, to provide this service for our stores. Phillips
Services Corporation (PSC) is another licensed hazardous waste
management company that may provide similar waste removal services for
select photo waste. Additional information regarding these companies is
included in the Supporting Information Section of your EH&S Program
Binder.
Making As discussed previously, CVS/pharmacy may generate potentially
Hazardous hazardous waste due to the products we sell. These materials exhibit
Waste
Determinations different characteristics or have specific ingredients which make them
© CVS/pharmacy 7
aCONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS INFORMATION
CVS000010348
