UST Closure Report 0
Sharpe Defense Distribution Region West
Lathrop,California Page 3
The table below summarizes information about the eight USTs removed from the site. All tanks
were of single-wall, steel construction and installed in 1970.
Sharpe Tank Capacity Diameter Length Last Contents
ID No. No. (gallons) (feet) (feet)
189821 25270 20,000 10.5 32 Diesel fuel
189822 25271 20,000 10.5 32 Unleaded gas
189823 25272 20,000 10.5 32 Unleaded gas
189824 25273 20,000 10.5 32 Unleaded gas
189825 25274 12,000 10.5 19 Diesel fuel
189826 25275 12,000 10.5 19 Unleaded gas
189827 25276 12,000 10.5 19 Diesel fuel
189964 25277 550 4.0 6 Waste water collected
from other tanks
The as-built diagrams of the USTs supplied by USACE and observations made by CAL INC
during UST excavation indicate the tanks were set about 3 feet apart in a 83-foot long by 32 or
19-foot wide area. Each tank was mounted on two concrete saddles that were 2 feet high. The
saddles were part of a series of seven underlying, 1.25 foot-thick, concrete slabs joined with
dowels. Two, 3/8 inch thick by 2-inch wide steel straps held the tanks on the saddles. The tanks
were covered with about a 2.5-foot thickness of fill.
2.1 Lithology of Sediments in Pre-UST Installation Test Hole
The USACE drilled a 20-foot deep test hole about 11 feet south of UST No. 26, on October 19,
1965, or about five years prior to installation of the USTs (Liquid Fuel Facility Site Plan and
Details by the USACE, 1959). The hole was drilled with a 30 inch-diameter (bucket) auger. The
summary log of the lithologies intersected in the test hole indicates the following succession:
Depth Below Lithology
Grade (feet)
0 - 0.5 Silty sand, brown, damp, dense,probably fill.
0.5 -4.5 Silty sand, gray, damp, sand fine grained, possible fill.
4.5 -5.5 Sand,brown,moist, fine grained.
5.5 -6.2 Clayey sand,buff,moist, moderately cemented.
6.2-7.5 Silty sand, tan, moist.
7.5 -9.0 Sandy clay, tight, gray,wet.
9.0- 10.0 Silty sand, tan, moist.
10.0- 11.5 Clayey sand,wet, cemented.
11.5 - 13.5 Silty sand, gray,moist.
13.5 - 14.5 Sandy clay, gray, moist.
® 16.5 Water table
16.5 - 20.0 Clayey sand, tan, saturated, water coming in fast.
N:\PROJECTS\3546\Reports\3546 UST Closure Report Draft.doc March 24,1999
