•
Designated backfill material ie. sand, crushed rock or pea gravel
should be used to form a temporary bedding. This uniform
bedding must be free of foreign matter, evenly graded and cut
out so that tank will not roll while in the storage area.
If strong winds are expected, secure tank to prevent damage.
After storage period and prior to installation, visually reinspect
tank for damage that could result in leakage or premature
corrosion.
PRE INSTALLATION TESTING (ALL TANKS)
NFPA-30 requires that all underground storage tanks be
tightness tested prior to covering.
Proper gauge selection is important. A gauge with maximum
readable range of 10 to 15 psi is recommended due to the
sensitivity required for gauges to detect slight changes in air
pressure. It is recommended that two gauges be used to reduce
the chance of an undetected gauge failure. In addition, it is
recommended to use a pressure relief valve to prevent over
pressurization of the tank or annular space. This relief valve
should be of sufficient capacity to relieve total output of air
source at a pressure setting of not more than 6 psig.
•
Care should be taken to check gauges for proper operation and
accuracy. Always confirm the proper gauge for the proper job,
vacuum gauges used on pressure tests have caused serious
accidents.
Pre Installation Testing
(Single Wall Tanks)
Single wall tanks must be tested for leaks by using a soap
solution or other approved methodology accepted by the
"authority having jurisdiction".
Remove thread protectors and shipping plugs from all openings.
Using compatible, non -hardening pipe sealant, install
permanent plugs or piping in all openings.
Pressurize tank to at least 3 prig but no more than 5 psig.
If no leaks are detected, release air pressure.
Refer to Modern Welding Company's publication, "Finishing
Instructions" for proper installation of permanent coverings for
unused openings, lifting lugs, piping, fittings and any exposed
steel surfaces. Finishing Instructions are not complete until
all exposed steel surfaces on tank are sealed with fiberglass
resin.
Pre Installation Testing
(Double Wall Tanks Type I and Type II)
AIR PRESSURE METHOD
Double wall tanks, Type I and Type II constructions must be
tested for leaks by using a soap solution or other approved
methodology accepted by the "authority having jurisdiction".
Remove thread protectors and shipping plugs from all openings.
Using compatible, non -hardening pipe sealant, install
permanent plugs or piping in all openings.
Pressurize primary tank to at least 3 psig but no more than 5
psig. Close off valve to primary tank and disconnect air
source. Monitor the gauge reading for one hour. If there is no
evidence of a leak, indicated by a drop in air pressure, then
bleed air over from the primary tank into the interstice.
The interstice shall have a separate gauge to indicate pressure
Quick
coupler
to air Valve
source
EWqq
o +
0
Bads -up Gauge
gauge
6 psig
= pressure
relief
device
•
Care should be taken to check gauges for proper operation and
accuracy.
