Short Form
( The contractor shall provide a jacketed steel underground D.
storage tank which carries U.L. listings for both the primary
steel storage tank and the secondary containment jacket which
covers tank construction, corrosion protection, secondary
containment and for storage of flammable liquids. The tanks
shall be manufactured by a Total Containment, Inc., licensed
manufacturer.
Tanks shall be tested and installed in accordance with the E.
manufacturers published installation instructions and only
approved bedding and backfill material may be used.
a
Le
Long Form
Construction Standards
A. Primary Storage Tank
Shall be a steel underground storage tank build in
accordance with the requirements of UL -58 and tested and
labeled accordingly.
B. Secondary Containment Jacket:
Shall be a Tank Jacket`, as manufactured by Total
Containment, Inc. applied to the primary storage tank in
accordance with the requirements of Underwriters
Laboratories, by a licensed tank manufacturer and tested
and labeled accordingly.
Construction Materials
A. Primary Storage Tank
Shall be all welded constructed of prime steel, of
appropriate wall thickness as required by U.L., ASME,
API, NFPA 30 and UFC.
B. Secondary Containment Jacket
Shall be made of 100 mil high density polyethylene with
all extrusion welded construction.
Design Performance
0
C.
Product Compatibility
Both the primary storage tank and secondary containment
jacket shall be compatible with gasoline, gasahol,
ethanol, methanol, jet fuel, av-gas, kerosene, diesel fuel,
and motor oil or fuel oil stored at temperatures not to
exceed 150°F.
Secondary Containment Jacket
The primary storage tank shall be contained in 360°,
air -pressure testable and unbreakable jacket; bonded
together with extrusion welds and sealed off at the fittings
by means of a compression O -Ring seal.
Interstitial Fluid Migration
There shall be an interstitial space between the primary
tank and secondary containment jacket, created by high
density polyethylene stand-off grid, with a high/low
profile, to allow 100% fluid migration between the wall
under maximum load conditions with a 5 to 1 safety
factor.
14
Corrosion Protection
The primary storage tank shall provide striker plates under
each fitting to eliminate internal impact corrosion due to
dipsticking. The secondary containment jacket shall
totally isolate the primary storage tank from all of
corrosion causing elements without the need for cathodic
protection and tested accordingly.
Monitoring Capability
The secondary containment jacket shall provide a 2" NPT
interstitial access fitting for insertion of a leak detection
sensor down to the bottom of the tank. This fitting shall
be located at the lower end of the sloped tank.
F. Contained Attachments
Tanks shall be designed to accommodate pipe exits and
containment sumps in such a manner that connection to
the tank is secondarily contained and water -tight.
Integrity Testing
A. Primary Storage Tank
At the factory, a 5 p.s.i. air pressure/soap test shall be
performed to detect pin hole leaks, prior to shipment.
B. Secondary Containment Jacket
At the factory, a 2 p.s.i. air pressure/soap test shall be
performed to detect pin hole leaks, prior to shipment.
C. Site Testing
Tanks will be site tested as follows: a 5 psi air pressure
hold test shall be performed to the primary storage tank
and an air pressure/soap test may be performed to the
secondary containment jacket not to exceed 1 si.—^
Note: T s ship sate witha continuous
vacuum (6 inches of mercury vacuum in the annular space
are not required to undergo site testing except where
required otherwise by code.
Accessories
A. Close -off Cap
All unused and non -contained fittings shall be plugged and
sealed with a protective cap to isolate fitting from the
surrounding environment.
B. Lifting Lugs
Lifting lugs shall be of a removable design to eliminate
metal exposure to the environment.
C. Anchor Straps
Anchor straps shall be provided with strap cushions
installed under each metal strap. Number and location
shall be specified by manufacturer.
D. Flanged Manways
24" and 30" manways are optional on tank diameters of
6', 8' and 10'. All manways shall be secondarily
contained and furnished complete with U.L. listed gaskets,
welded studs and covers.
