In February 1989 a team of LLNL personnel and Science Applications
International Corporation personnel obtained two soil samples in order to
demonstrate that no unauthorized releases from the tank had occurred. Sample
locations are shown on the plot plan included as Attachment 6. Blue prints
were used to estimate the tank's former location and depth. The locations of
each end of the tank were estimated, and samples were taken at depths of
160 inches and 173 inches (LPI-813-160 and LP2-813-173, respectively) .
Samples were composed of native sandstone. An attempt was made to sample
along the previous piping path but the gravelly nature of the soil precluded
the collection of an acceptable sample. Samples were analyzed for Total Fuel
Hydrocarbons and Volatile Aromatics using EPA Methods 8015 and 8020,
respectively. The results of the analyses (Attachment 7) showed that no
contaminants were present at levels above limits of detection. These
analytical results, in conjunction with the leak tightness test results,
demonstrate that there were no unauthorized releases from Tank 813-11D.
2
