Inspection Report
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories
Site 300
Inspection date - 08/16-17/2001
analysis as requested during the inspection. That waste analysis was for the waste stream listed on manifest
#99555391. This waste analysis is was not an analysis conducted by LLNLS300, nor was it taken from
LLNLS300's waste stream. However, it still would be required to be maintained on site if LLNLS300 were using
it as their waste analysis documentation. At that time, the waste analysis provided to me on 05/18/01 had been
faxed to Rob by Safety-Kleen (for details see inspection report for 05/16-18/01 inspection). I stated that
violation number two is citing them for failure to maintain that waste analysis on file at the facility.
We then returned to the inspection plans for today, and where I wanted to start my observations. I told Dan that
I would like to start with Bldg. 851, Bldg. 850, Magazine 816, and Bldg. 883. 1 then verbally gave Dan a list of
the documents I wanted to have available for the document review. This concluded the in-briefing.
BLDG. 851:
I started my field observations with Bldg. 851. Upon arrival Dan signed us in and introduced us to Nick
Williams (Nick), Facility Engineer and Tommy Rambur (Tom), Facility Technician. Bldg. 851 is one of three
firing tables with a SAA. The wastes generated are low level radioactive waste and photographic waste. We
were given a briefing on the safety guidelines to follow while in this building. At my request, Nick explained that
the photographic waste is generated in Room 108, the x-ray dark room, and in Room 116, the photo processing
room. Essam and 1 observed the SAA's for Room 108 & 116. The containers used for accumulation in Rooms
116 and 108 respectively, were observed to be closed and labeled with all of the required information.
We then went outside where Nick explained how the photo rinse water is managed after it leaves Bldg. 801.
The photo rinse water is not a hazardous waste after the silver has been removed. The photo rinse water is
pumped from Bldg. 801 to a below grade holding tank, 851 RIUI, #5006. This below grade tank is a few feet
east and south of Bldg. 801. From this tank the rinse waters are transferred by gravity flow to a larger holding
tank. This holding tank is referred to as Photo Rinse Water Recovery Tank, #R1A2. From this tank the rinse
waters are pumped into a tanker truck and discharged into the Class 11 surface impoundment. The surface
impoundment is regulated under a WDR permit. Prior to being discharged into the Class II surface
impoundment, a sample of the waste water is taken from the large holding tank.
This concluded my inspection of Bldg. 851, 1 thanked Nick for his assistance and we left the area. Alan advised
me that he did not get any unusual reading while in this area.
DTSC (3/95) Page 7 of 11
