Inspection Report
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories
Site 300
Inspection date - 08/16-17/2001
BLDG. 801:
While on the way to Bldg. 851, it was decided to go to Bldg. 801 instead of Bldg. 850. This area is identified as
a SAA area. The wastes generated are low level radioactive waste and photographic waste. The set up for x-
ray and photographic developing is much the same as Bldg. 851. There are three SAA's, two are photographic
waste and the third is waste oil. I briefly checked the SAA in room 801. 1 observed the container for the
photographic waste was closed, and labeled with all the required information.
Bldg. 801 now houses the newly constructed Contained Firing Facility (CFF). Instead of the test firings being
done in the open, on a gravel surface, it can now be done in a completely enclosed area that is constantly
monitored remotely by computer. The day before my arrival, LLNLS300 held a grand opening dedication
ceremony. Nick Williams, who was facilitating the tour and inspection of Bldg. 801, explained that when the
CFF is up and running, it will be generating low level radioactive waste and photographic and x-ray waste. In
addition there is a scrubber unit, which has been permitted by the San Joaquin Air Quality Management District.
Air is circulated into the firing chamber and forced out through vents where it goes thru a scrubber system .
The walls, after a firing, will be washed down and the rinse waters sent out to a rinse water tank on the north
side of the building. The rinse waters will also be filtered on their way to the storage tank. At the time of my
visit the firing chamber and laser were being readied for the first shot.
MAGAZINE 816:
In previous reports Magazine 816 had been referred to as Bldg. 816. During the 05/16-18/01 inspection I was
informed that the designation had changed. Mr. Scott, Facility Manager EWSF & EWTF, had advised that this
area should be referred to as Magazine 816.
Magazine 816 is identified in the Part B as a permitted EWSF for HE waste. This area also has five smaller
storage magazines which are used for storage of Form Four HE wastes. Jackie Christian, Sr. Explosive
Waste Technician recently retired, he was replaced by Patrick Gallagher (Pat), Explosive Waste Technician.
Pat is responsible for this area and does the inspections. We were joined by John Scott (John), Facility
Manager for EWSF.
Inside Magazine 816 1 observed 34 drums which held hazardous waste. I observed that the lids on all drums
DTSC (3/95) Page 8 of 11
