Knight, J.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Area 300
27 August 2001
' Page 3
RESULTS
The site visit occurred on Thursday, 16 August 2001. Four areas were visited,
851, 801, 816 and 883. Area 883 was the hazardous waste storage facility and
was divided into two parts, north and south. These two parts, north and south,
where the 90 day and one year storage areas respectively for hazardous wastes.
Area 851 was an above ground explosives testing area. Area 801 was the
confined explosive testing area. The main source of chemical wastes in areas
851 and 801 were the X-ray/photo development rooms. Area a 816 was the _
explosives and explosive waste storage facility.
The MiniRae®during this inspection did not detect volatile organic compounds in
any area. The Ludlum 3 did not pick up any radiation source that had not been
previously identified by the Ludlum 19. 'The Ludlum 19 detected a 7-10 pR
background of gamma rays. No radiation sources were found during the
inspection with the single exception of a radioactive waste drum stored in
building 883 north. This source was a 55 gallon drum which emitted 2 mR/hr
immediately adjacent to the drum.
Three SAIL radiation dosimeters were used. One was kept in the car and one
was given to each of the two DTSC employees conducting the inspection. The
following results were found:
16 August LLNL Area 300 SAIC Readings
Dosimeter Total Dose Dose minus
and person Start time End Time Hours MR Background
D12580 0730 1450 7.33 0.09 -0.02
Jo Ann
D12585 0730 1450 7.33 0.12 0.01
Alan
D12588 0730 1450 7.33 0.11 NA
Background
SPECIFIC COMMENTS
During this inspection, no unknown radiation sources were detected. While
radiation sources are present, they are identified and containerized by LLNL
staff. During the inspection, DTSC employees were not exposed to volatile
organic compounds nor were DTSC employees exposed to a significant source
of gamma radiation. Dosimeter reading indicates no exposure above
background. Difference in readings on the SAIC were within the SAIC accuracy
range (± 20%).
