Knight, J. <br /> Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Area 300 <br /> 27 August 2001 <br /> ' Page 3 <br /> RESULTS <br /> The site visit occurred on Thursday, 16 August 2001. Four areas were visited, <br /> 851, 801, 816 and 883. Area 883 was the hazardous waste storage facility and <br /> was divided into two parts, north and south. These two parts, north and south, <br /> where the 90 day and one year storage areas respectively for hazardous wastes. <br /> Area 851 was an above ground explosives testing area. Area 801 was the <br /> confined explosive testing area. The main source of chemical wastes in areas <br /> 851 and 801 were the X-ray/photo development rooms. Area a 816 was the _ <br /> explosives and explosive waste storage facility. <br /> The MiniRae®during this inspection did not detect volatile organic compounds in <br /> any area. The Ludlum 3 did not pick up any radiation source that had not been <br /> previously identified by the Ludlum 19. 'The Ludlum 19 detected a 7-10 pR <br /> background of gamma rays. No radiation sources were found during the <br /> inspection with the single exception of a radioactive waste drum stored in <br /> building 883 north. This source was a 55 gallon drum which emitted 2 mR/hr <br /> immediately adjacent to the drum. <br /> Three SAIL radiation dosimeters were used. One was kept in the car and one <br /> was given to each of the two DTSC employees conducting the inspection. The <br /> following results were found: <br /> 16 August LLNL Area 300 SAIC Readings <br /> Dosimeter Total Dose Dose minus <br /> and person Start time End Time Hours MR Background <br /> D12580 0730 1450 7.33 0.09 -0.02 <br /> Jo Ann <br /> D12585 0730 1450 7.33 0.12 0.01 <br /> Alan <br /> D12588 0730 1450 7.33 0.11 NA <br /> Background <br /> SPECIFIC COMMENTS <br /> During this inspection, no unknown radiation sources were detected. While <br /> radiation sources are present, they are identified and containerized by LLNL <br /> staff. During the inspection, DTSC employees were not exposed to volatile <br /> organic compounds nor were DTSC employees exposed to a significant source <br /> of gamma radiation. Dosimeter reading indicates no exposure above <br /> background. Difference in readings on the SAIC were within the SAIC accuracy <br /> range (± 20%). <br />
