Below .are the
minimum required inspections:
a. Before installation, the tank ;hall be tested for tightness at the installation site LU accordance
with the manufacturer's writter, guidelines. If there are no guidelines, the primar
y and
secondary containment shall be tested for tightness with air pressure between 3 and 5 pounds
per -square inch, 1-a lieu of a pressure test, a vacuum expressed in inches of mercury in the
interstitial space of the secondazy containment, is acceptable. The px=sure (or -vacuum in
the interstitial space) shall bem&imibed for a minimum of 30 minutes.
b. All now primary piping and secondary contaiament systems shall be rested for tightness after
installation in accordance with tnanufacturer's guidelines. Primary pressurized piping shall
be hydrostatically tested at 150 percent of design operating pressure or pneumatically at 110
percem of design operating pressure. If the calculated test pressure for pressurized piping is
less than 40 psi, 40 psi shall be used as the test pressure. The pressure shall be maintained
for a mininium of 30 minutes and all joints shall be soap tested. If there are no
manufacmer's guidelines, secondary containment systems shall be tested using an applicable
method specified in an industry code or engineering standard.
All lines other than pressure piping shall be pressure tested at not less than 3 p.s.i. and not
more the 5 p.s.i. for a minimum of 30 minutes and soap tested while under pressure.
d. Contaimment sumps shall pass a 24 hour hydrostatic Ink test.
e. The spill container shall be shown to be capable of draining liquid back into the fuel tanks.
f. The monitoring system shall pass a functional test. Tice fum-nonal test shall consist, of the
activation of the alarm via all monitoring probes/sensors.
g. Final inspection and approval to operate gill be granted after the above requirements are
satisfied and a hard copy of the tank integrity test (as -required by Section 2635 (a) (5)1 is
submitted to the kispec:tor at the site.
If you need further assistance, or wish to schedule an appointment to discuss the plan review
or field insVetiou, please contact our Underground Storage Tank Staff at (209) 468-3427.
