1 9 0
0
0
n,
C
J
[J
[7
if
Until recently, tank owners were required to install many different
environmental systems to achieve their compliance goals. It is not
uncommon to find facilities with a tank gauging system, line leak detection
system and a separate vapor detection system. Of the many problems this
creates, the major ones are:
No communication between systems. The tank level systems does not know when
the pump is running, therefore, if product is sold during a test, the amount
of sale is declared a leak at the end of the tank test.
Single source, proprietary hardware. The industry has protected technology by
not allowing standards to develop to allow probes to be used by multiple
SOC (controller units). As new, improved sensor technologies arrive the
tank owner is faced with abandoning not only the field probe but also the
investment in the controller.
No standards for remote communication. Few systems have emerged with more
than an available communication port (usually RS -232). This is not
sufficient for most applications where specific communication protocols are
required to provide data integrity.
Control Engineers, U.S.A. Page 15
