PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
The work plan proposed the drilling and sampling of three soil borings to further investigate residual soil
contamination documented during the May 18, 1994 over excavation. Two of the soil borings will be
drilled vertically to a total depth of approximately 20 feet. The third soil boring will be drilled at a 45
degree angle to a total vertical depth of 20 feet. Soil samples will be collected every five feet for
geological description: A minimum of two soil samples will be collected from each borehole for laboratory
analysis.
PHS/EHD concurs that the proposed soil borings should investigate the extent of soil contamination based
on available information. In addition to the analysis for BTEX, TPH-g and EDB described in the
workplan, PHS/EHD suggests that contaminant leachability testing be performed (WET or TCLP) on
some samples. Once the extent of contamination has been determined it may be necessary to develop a
remedial action plan.
Please submit the S89*e for the drilling soil boring permit application submitted. Field work may
commence upon issuance of the drilling permit. Please, provide PHS/EHD 48 hours notice prior to
initiating Feld activities, so that PHS/EHD can witness soil sampling and grouting.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact Mary Meays of my staff at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, RENS; Director
Environmental Health Division
V
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Diane on, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
MM:lb
N
c: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB
c: Keith Tallia, Oil Equipment Services
c: Marc Crum, Condor Environmental
A Division of San.loaquin County Health Care Services
