2 2 2. Groundwater Monitonng, Samohng and Anaivsis
to
On November 5, 1998, groundwater from the newly-installed wells was monitored and sampled
Upon arrival at the site, each of the wellheads was inspected, unlocked and opened Depth-to-
groundwater was measured in each of the wells using a water level indicator capable of
measuring groundwater to within 0 01 foot
Following the groundwater level measurements, each of the wells was purged and sampled The
wells were purged using a battery-operated downhole pump until at least three well casing
volumes were extracted and/or after groundwater temperature, pH and electrical conductivity
values had stabilized Following well purging, groundwater was sampled from the wells using
dedicated disposable bailers and laboratory-supplied containers Each sample was labeled,
packaged in an iced cooler and transported under chain-of-custody documentation to Kiff
Analytical, LLC (Kiff), a state of California certified hazardous waste testing laboratory
(Certification #2236)
Kiff analyzed each of the groundwater samples for TPH-as-diesel, TPH-as-gasoline, BTEX and
' MTBE by Modified EPA Methods 8015 and 8020 To test for the alcohol- and ether based
oxygenate compounds, Kiff also analyzed each of the groundwater samples for MTBE, Di-
isopropyl
risopropyl ether (DIPE), Ethyl tertiary butyl ether(ETBE), Tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME) and
Tertiary butanol (TBA) by EPA Method 8260
Groundwater samples from each of the wells were also submitted to BioLogic Biotechnical
Laboratory (BioLogic) for physiochemical and microbial analyses BioLogic analyzed each of the
three groundwater samples for pH and concentrations of nitrogen (nitrate, nitrite and ammonia),
phosphorous (as ortho-phosphate) and potassium In addition, BioLogic performed general
(heterotrophic, nonspecific) and selective (diesel specific) plate count enumerations
In the field, dissolved oxygen measurements were taken from the groundwater at each of the
xY9
three wells using a LaMotte titration test kit By the azide modification of the Winkler Method,
dissolved oxygen values ranged from 1 5 parts per million (ppm) in MW-2 to 2 4 ppm in MW-3 In
general, the dissolved oxygen results indicate a direct correlation between oxygen deficiency and
concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons The dissolved oxygen results for all of the wells are
included in Table 4
i8
I
