PAGE 5
7 Lime pond operation and maintenance
7.1 Security and posting
Carbide lime ponds should be secured by a fence. The fence should comply with CGA P-50, Site Security Stand-
ard[9].The perimeter fence protecting the pond should be conspicuously posted with weatherproof signs stating
the following (or equivalent wording):
PRIVATE PROPERTY
NO TRESPASSING
KEEP OUT
NO DUMPING
Inside the perimeter fence, adjacent to the actual lime pond or ponds, signs stating the following (or equivalent
wording) should also be posted:
CARBIDE LIME CAN CAUSE BURNS TO THE SKIN OR EYES IF CONTACTED.
KEEP OUT!
All signs should be legible and clearly visible from all approaches to the lime pond area.
Carbide lime handling areas also should be posted with signs reading (or equivalent wording):
NO SMOKING or NO OPEN FLAMES
Small amounts of acetylene gas, which can emanate from lime discharged from the acetylene generator, can be
ignited by any ignition source. This is due to small amounts of unreacted calcium carbide and from acetylene
dissolved in water. Such after-generation of acetylene gas dissipates within several hours.
7.2 Safe handling
All personnel working with or near carbide lime should wear eye protection with side shields. In areas where
splashing of lime slurry is likely to occur, chemical splash goggles and a full-face shield should be worn for
additional protection. Personnel should wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers. Proper gloves and footwear
(leather for dry lime material or rubber for lime slurry) should also be worn. Where exposure to dry carbide lime
or lime dust is possible, an approved nuisance dust respirator should be worn. Clothing contaminated with lime,
including gloves and shoes, should be removed as soon as possible and flushed with water to remove lime
residue, which can cause injury to the skin. For additional information an personal protective equipment, see
G-1.5 [4].
All areas where carbide lime is handled should have an approved and easily accessible eye wash and safety
shower. Spare safety glasses, face shields, and dust respirators should be available for visitors or in case of
damage to workers' gear.
Ali employees and contractors should be trained in the hazards of carbide lime including a review of the supplier's
safety data sheet. All such training shall be documented.
7.3 Lime pond integrity
7.3.1 Maintaining freeboard
It is important to maintain at least 1 ft (0.3 m) of freeboard below the top of the lime pond berm to contain and
prevent escape of lime to the environment. Depending on the pond's location and climate, the height of the
freeboard may be increased where appropriate. Lime ponds should be inspected regularly to verify containment
of lime.
This document licensed for the sole use of the purchaser.
