CGA G-1.8-2017 <br /> 7.3.2 Refuse in ponds <br /> Every attempt should be made to prevent waste materials from being disposed/discharged into or around lime <br /> ponds or lime processing areas. Under no circumstances should any hazardous waste be mixed in or disposed <br /> of in a lime pond. This can cause the lime to be considered a hazardous waste. Contamination of lime material <br /> can result in loss of marketable lime product and increased expenses when closing the lime pond. <br /> 7.4 Removal of lithe slurry or lime paste <br /> Removal methods and procedures used by owners and/or operators of carbide lime ponds vary depending upon <br /> the end use for the lime. Most carbide lime is used as a product (as described in 4.2). Therefore, pay attention <br /> to the lime co-product user's application and quality requirements. The user's application and desired form and <br /> quality often determines the most appropriate removal and handling methods. <br /> 7.4.1 Removal as lime paste <br /> Lime settles out at the bottom of a pond, separating from standing water, and approaches a paste consistency <br /> overtime.Carbide lime is removed from a pond as paste in instances when customers can handle larger volumes <br /> of lime and/or have facilities to add water to the paste to create lime slurry for use in their applications. <br /> Lime paste can be removed from a pond using standard excavation/construction equipment, Equipment typically <br /> used for removal of lime paste from a pond includes the following: <br /> • Hydraulic excavator (backhoeltrackhoe)—This equipment is readily available and requires a minimal oper- <br /> ating area and minimal mobilization/demobilization time. It is good for situations where multiple handling of <br /> the lime is required. <br /> NOTE—Lime pond configuration can require extended-boom equipment. <br /> • Crane with dragline—The dragline is effective for lime removal and direct loading of balk transport <br /> vehicles; or <br /> NOTE—This equipment requires a larger operating area and a more stable working base than a lighter piece of equipment <br /> such as a backhoeltrackhoe. <br /> • Front-end loader—If the lime is dry enough, this equipment can be used to excavate paste from the pond <br /> and to load transport vehicles.This equipment is readily available and is more versatile than a backhoe/track- <br /> hoe or dragline. A loader is particularly useful for decking out lime paste in a staging area for further water <br /> drainage before transport. <br /> One of the most important aspects of lime paste removal is equipment operator experience.Any operator remov- <br /> ing lime from a pond should be trained in the proper operation of the equipment and the characteristics of lime. <br /> Preferably, the operator should have previous pond/lagoon excavation experience. An owner/operator should <br /> provide direction and oversight of contractors regarding lime removal to meet quality needs and environmental <br /> controls. <br /> Carefully plan lime paste removal from a pond. Do it during dry weather conditions and agree with contractors to <br /> avoid excavation during wet weather conditions. Also, instruct contractors to take precautions to avoid releases <br /> of lime off site (such as from tires, leaking trailers, etc.). The following should also be considered: <br /> • Water run on and runoff—During excavation activity,pond berms and dikes should remain intact and be able <br /> to contain precipitation. An owner and/or operator should anticipate any necessary dewatering activities and <br /> plan pond excavation accordingly(leaving open previously excavated areas for water accumulation or trans- <br /> fer from working areas); and <br /> • Layout of the working area—if it is expected that the lime paste contains excessive free water, it may be <br /> necessary to stage excavated lime for dewatering before loading in the transport vehicle. This staging_area <br /> should drain back to the pond or the drainage water should otherwise be contained. Before leaving the pond <br /> site, all transport vehicles should be cleaned to avoid tracking lime from the site. <br /> This document licensed for the sole use of the purchaser.
