Agency Observation: Per Alba Recinos (Safety Specialist),Amazon personnel identify a waste if
an item is damaged or leaking. The bar code on the item is scanned and the computer tells what
hazard category drum/tote to sort the waste into. Per Alba Recinos (Safety Specialist), if one
item spills onto another item, employees will put both items into the waste category that is
most dangerous between the two items. During the inspection, a spray bottle of Iron Out was
observed in the corrosive tote but had the words "Flammable 8 level 5" written on the plastic
bag the spray bottle was in. When the Iron Out was scanned it came up as both corrosive and
flammable. Please clarify how Amazon identifies, sorts and stores it's waste. Please include
information on how a waste determination is made for items that have more than one
hazardous property.
Amazon's Response: Amazon's Response: Amazon has a robust Regulated waste process to
determine waste characterization. Using generator's knowledge internal tools, the associate is
able to identify if the waste is a regulated waste. Once identified as a regulated waste, the
procedure clarifies to segregate the waste according to their hazard characteristics. Part of the
process is to utilize a flow chart to identify the path. The waste is separated according to
incompatibilities, characteristics and storage conditions. This waste is kept for less than 1 week
since according to amazon's regulated waste standards, all waste that has been already
processed will be shipped as a minimum weekly. Wastes with more than one hazard will be
processed and segregated according to their most hazardous characteristics and evaluating the
SDS for incompatibilities, in case information if not readily accessible, a profile evaluation will be
made by the environmental engineers and certified contractor if necessary.
