..-J
31 October 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0254
Prior to conducting field activities, appropriate boring permits will be obtained from the San Joaquin
County Environmental Health Department (EHD). As required by EHD permitting, an updated
health and safetyplan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Guidance
Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities(National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1985). Prior to
mobilization, the proposed excavation area will be clearly marked and an underground utility
clearance will be obtained through Underground Service Alert.
3.2. MONITORING WELL ABANDONMENT
Monitoring wells MW-1B,MW-4 and MW-7, located within the proposed excavation area, will be
abandoned by over-drilling to total depth and backfilling with portland cement prior to excavation
activities. Wells will be abandoned in accordance with EHD guidelines.
3.3. SOIL REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL
Soil removal activities will consist of excavation and disposal of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted
soil related to the unauthorized release at the former gasoline UST area. The proposed area of
excavation was delineated based on the analytical results for soil samples collected from borings B-2
through B-6, B-14, MW-4 and P-1 (Table 1, Figure 2), which indicated that the area in which the
referenced soil borings were advanced appears to be significantly impacted by petroleum
hydrocarbons.
It is proposed that petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soil be transported off-site for disposal at an
appropriately licensed disposal facility. Soil removal tasks are presented below.
3.3.1. Soil Excavation and Backfilling
Soil removal activities will consist of excavating and stockpiling both potentially uncontaminated
shallow subsurface soil and petroleum-impacted soil at the site. Based on the findings of previous
investigations, the vertical extent of contaminated soil appears to be approximately 12 feet bsg
(Figure 3). The proposed area of soil to be excavated is approximately 12 feet deep, 100 feet long
and 60 feet wide.
During excavation activities, excavated soil will be screened for volatile organic compounds using
an organic vapor meter(OVM)equiped with a photo-ionization detector(PID).Excavated soil will
be segregated into either "clean" or impacted soil stockpiles. Excavated soil that appears visibly
Advanced GmEnvironmental,Inc.
