07 December 2010
AGE-NC Project No. 08-1598
WELL DESTRUCTION PROCEDURES
On 01 November 2010, monitoring wells MW-4 through MW-6 were destroyed at the site,
under EHD oversight, utilizing a CME 75 truck mounted drill rig equipped with 8.25-inch
diameter hollow stem augers. The drill rig and three-person crew were supplied by All Well
Abandonment, of Placerville, California.
Monitoring wells MW-4, MW-5 and MW-6 were destroyed by grouting the well casings
under pressure and over-drilling each well to five feet bsg. Prior to commencement of well
destruction activities each well casing was sounded with a Solinst water level meter to
ensure that no obstructions were present in the casings. Subsequently, well boxes and
caps were removed to expose the well casings.
The wells were fitted with a pressure tight adapter connected to a hose extending from the
grout mixer. The grout mixture was pumped into each well casing under approximately
5-10 pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. The wells were over-drilled to five feet bsg
using a CME-75 hollow stem auger drill rig equipped with 8-inch diameter hollow stem
augers. The top five feet of the well casings were then removed and the borings were
grouted to the near surface using the portland cement grout mixture.
Well construction materials and auger returns generated by drilling were containerized in
properly labeled Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved model 17H 55-gallon
drums and were stored on-site.
NON-HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL
On 11 November and 12 November 2010, approximately 110 gallons of non-hazardous
purge water(generated from monitoring events)and 2,050 pounds of soil cuttings and solid
waste (generated from well installations and destructions)containerized in 55-gallon drums
were removed from the site by Advanced Chemical Transport, Inc. (ACT) of Merced,
California. Non-hazardous liquid waste was transported and disposed of at Instrat, Inc.,
located in Rio Vista, California. Non-hazardous solid waste was transported and disposed
of at Chemical Waste Management, located in Kettleman City, California. Non-hazardous
waste manifests are included in Appendix D.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
