kn KLEINFELDER
2 BACKGROUND
The Tracy Community Memorial :Hospital (TCMH) is located at 1420 North 'Tracy
. Boulevard in Tracy, California (Plate 1, Site Location Map). Recent construction at the
hospital and SJLHD regulations necessitated the removal of two underground storage
tanks. It is Kieinfelder's understanding that a 500-gallon diesel tank and a 5,000-gallon
diesel tank were removed from the site on September 19, 1988. For safety purposes the
excavation was backfilled shortly thereafter.
Kleinfelder was retained by TCMH and conducted a Phase I and II soil assessment on
December 1, 1988, and January 24, 25, and 27, 1989, based on analytical 'results obtained
from samples beneath the tanks at the time of excavation. Results of these investigations
are presented in Kleinfelder's soil; investigation',reports dated December 9, 1988, and
February 13, 1989. Phase I activities consisted of.drilling and sampling seven soil borings
to assess the extent of the subsurface contamination:_ Phase II activities consisted of soil
excavation, in which contaminated soil was tested and hauled off for proper disposal. The
excavation proceedings were stopped and a small amount of contaminated soil was left in
the ground. Further excavation in that area would have compromised the integrity of an
existing structure. The excavation was subsequently backfilled with clean fill by TCMH for
safety purposes.
The San Joaquin Local Health District (SJLHD) requested that TCMH assess the ground
water in the vicinity of the former underground tanks for the presence of petroleum
hydrocarbon contamination.
,t
{
1
k
_ 1
175-89-543 2
N
Ih
S
