Th:,
facility driveway and parking lot are paved with four-inch thick
asphalt. The remainder of the operations yard is lined with concrete.
The entire site is enclosed within a six-foot high chain link fence
which is topped with barbed wire. The facility buildings are
constructed of wood, steel, and cincrete and many were demolished or
were scheduled for demolition. The wine barrel storage warehouse and
the distillation building were structurally weak and considered unsafe
at the time of the site visit. These buildings are constructed with
wood beam frames.
The concrete wine fermentation building is constructed of precast
concrete slabs. The fermentation building has 38 above-ground vats and
8 sumps, all of which are constructed of concrete. The vats and sumps
were in good condition and no evidence of leakage was observed.
The wood and steel chemical storage building was demolished on
December 14, 1987. The buildingwas y
trisodium phosphate, sodium caronate Previously and used
the storage
of
compounds. ing
•'There was no evidence of contamination resulting from any
spills and, according to Nr. Beck, there have never been any spills.
Insulation which contained asbestos was present on equipment in the
distillation building. According to Nr. Beck, the asbestos-containing
materials were removed during July, 1987, and disposed of by an asbestos
removing contractor. The remaining portions of the bui}ding were
demolished on December 14, 1987.
e
A 15,800-gallon underground fuel storage tank was located just north
of the distillation building. The tank contained No. 2 diesel fuel as a
backup fuel source for the natural gas-powered distillation boiler. The
tank may also have contained bunker C oil. The exact age of the tank is
unknown. The tank is constructed of concrete and was removed during
January, 1987. At the time of Versar's assessment, the 14-foot deep
tank excavation pit was approximately half filled with rainwater runoff
(see Photo 1, Attachment 11).
