durability include:
o Oxidation - asphalt forms water soluble oxidation
products which can leach from the asphalt changing its
composition. As the more soluble oils are leached from
the asphalt mixture, the exposed surface may become
hard and brittle. If the pavement cracks, deeper layers
may be exposed to air and water, thus compromising the
durability of the road
o Volatilization - resulting in the loss of the lighter
oil fractions
o Separation - the lighter oils are sometimes selectively
absorbed by the aggregate
o syneresis or staining - the tendency of some asphalt
mixtures to exude the lighter oils at the pavement
surface. Syneresis may impact the skid resistance of
the pavement as well as the durability of the asphalt.
The durability of the asphalt pavement mixture is usually
enhanced by high asphalt content and compacted impervious
mixtures. Application of a protective. top coating after curing
may also enhance the pavements durability.
The long--term flexibility and fatigue: resistance of the asphalt
pavement and the workability is enhanced by the sane: factors
impacting durability. As can be seen, high asphalt content will
increase the durability, flexibility, and workability of the
asphalt pavement, but :nay decrease its stability especially in
critical sand mixtures.
FEASIBILITY STUDY
A feasibility study was conducted in the spring of 1.9s9 to
determine whether sandy soils contaminated with residual fuel oil
could be stabilized with an asphalt binder and used as a paving
mixture. Proposed uses for the paving mixture included all
weather surfacing of light-duty access roads, st-: ..ge yards,
automobile parking, and possible use as a temporary liner in an
emergency run-off reservoir. The soils had been excavated during
the repair of residual fuel storage tanks and transport lines,
and stockpiled upon plastic tarpaulins spread throughout the
facility.
r
In order to evaluate the soil characteristics, the samples were
obtained of the sand and fuel oil for bench-scale testing. Twenty
representative samples were obtained by trenching through the
stockpiled sands with a backhoe. Each sample was sealed in a
plastic bag and labeled for transport to the
laboratory. The approximate volunes of each stockpile were
_
estimated
by measuring__its-dimensions-with-atape-measure-to.
allow proper weighting of the sample analyses. §
