Retain the SP001 Formal External Inspection Report for the life of the tank.
Provide the report to all future inspectors for their reference.

3.5. Ultrasonic Thickness Testing
Due to the amount of exterior corrosion on the tank shell, the SP001 Standard required
Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) to be performed on the exterior of the tank shell in
order to assess continued use of the tank. The UTT reading results are attached at the
bottom of the report for current and future reference. As of the date of inspection, the
results from the UTT readings indicate fairly consistent degradation of the secondary
tank shell in comparison to the original shell thickness noted in the UL -2085 standard
for the construction of the tank. Due to the corrosion observed on the exterior of the
tank and the readings found during the UTT inspection, the tank is required to be
retested in 5 years in order to confirm an accurate corrosion rate. The thinnest UTT
reading found was .141 (out of a possible .250 or 1/4” steel). The overall averag e
thickness of the area tested on the tank averaged .175.

UTT readings using an echo-to-echo transducer and meter were taken using a couplant
gel. The UTT meter was calibrated onsite using a 5 step wedge for carbon steel.
Readings were started at the North end of the tank along the entire belly (lowest point)
of the tank and then moved toward the south end in 12” increments (the last set of
readings on the south end was a 6” increment). The first point reading was taken at the
knuckle (UT-1). Readings were also taken moving directly up on the left and right sides
of the tank at the ¼, ½, and ¾ horizontal lines starting from midline UT point reading on
the belly of the tank. In addition, point readings were also taken of the North and South
bulkheads. Based on the UL 2085 standard, the bulkheads are 5/16” Steel and observed
to be in good condition without external corrosion observed.

4. Required Inspection Intervals
Category 1 Aboveground Storage Tanks traditionally require formal external inspections to be
conducted every 20 years by a certified tank inspector. Due to the amount of exterior corrosion
observed on the exterior tank shell, the tank is required to be reinspected five years from the
date of this current inspection to gauge the corrosion rate of the tank walls. Once the corrosion
rate is determined, the next inspection interval can be determined at that time.

The next Formal External Inspection with Ultrasound Thickness Testing on the exterior shell of
the tank is due on or before 11/24/2025.
