Both chests had "blue ice" , however, they had not maintained
a proper temperature so crushed ice was purchased and placed
in both coolers . A thermometer was used to check and control
box temperature during and after collection
JTO equipment for excavating and moving soil was already on
site when Dennis R Allen, ( WJH) , R Thorpe , (JTO) , Anne
Dito , land owner representative and M Infurna, (San Joaquin
PHS/EHD) arrived on site about 9 20 AM
FARM WATER WELLS
The farm water well adjacent to the excavation site
(21 ' away) is herein designated WW #1 , the farm well located
across the drive way (541away) on the adjacent property is
designated as WW # 2 The relative location of the surface
appurtenances can be seen in the JTO proposal (Attachment
No 1 )
During the commencement of digging, two vial samples and one
liter sample of water were taken from WW # 1 . A small spigot
was located on top of the well it was cleaned with alcohol
pads supplied by M Infurna and allowed to run for several
minutes prior to sampling The total sampling process took
about 1/2 hour owing to automatic cycling of the pump The
spigot was not pressurized except when the well pump was
operating This mechanical process assured that the water
. sampled was coming directly from the well
At a later time , WW # 2 was sampled from a house spigot
about 100 ' from the well . A small spigot was located on top
of this well also, however, no water could be obtained from
it The house spigot was cleaned as noted above and run for
two minutes before taking the sample This spigot had been
running intermittently for several hours prior to taking the
sample in an effort to wet down dust being stirred by the
spoil being moved and stored
Owing to the proximity of the wells to the excavation (where
an old cesspool had been uncovered as will be detailed
later herein) , the well samples were labeled for testing as
follows BTEX, 0 & G, EDB and coliform Bacteria (at the
request of M Infurna)
On August 13, 1991 R Thorpe called D Allen and stated that
the laboratory required additional sampling for the
coliform tests It was agreed that R Thorpe and a
laboratory technician from Weston Analytical Lab would
collect additional water samples from the two wells These
additional samples were collected on 8/13/91 Both samples
were collected from the spigots at the pump head. As shown
on the attached c. 0 C record, these samples were preserved
• using various preservatives for different samples All
sample equipment was supplied by Weston Lab, the samples
4
