Di salvo Tmck Lines-SIR <br /> March 9. 1995 <br /> i <br /> Page-3- <br /> 3.0 FIELD PROCEDURES <br /> Prior to beginning field work, a tailgate safety meeting was held and a site-specific health and <br /> safety plan was discussed with, and signed by all crew members. Condor proposed, in the work plan <br /> approved by SJCPHS,EHD, to install five soil probes and two optional soil probes to investigate the <br /> extent of soil and groundwater contamination at the Di Salvo Truck Lines site. On January 19, 1995, 1 <br /> k <br /> a total of four soil probes (SPI through SP4) were installed at the site. A fifth soil probe located near <br /> the center of the tank excavation was abandoned because the sidewalls of the soil probe continued to <br /> collapse as the coring tool was retracted from the probe hole. The optional soil probes were not <br /> installed at he site. The location of soil probes SP I through SP4 are shown in Figure-2, Appendix A. <br /> i <br /> Each soil probe was installed using a Geoprobe.percussion-driven, tool operated by Vironex. <br /> The total depth of the four soil probes was approximately 16 feet below around surface (bgs). Each <br /> soil probe was installed and destroyed under .the supervision of Keith Tailia (C57 License *323417). <br /> A Condor geologist was on site to observe the installation of, and to collect soil and groundwater <br /> samples from, each soil probe. y <br /> F <br /> 3.1 Sample Collection - Soil <br /> SPI was installed using a Geoprobe 1.125 inch O.D. drive-point sampler. Soil samples were <br /> collected from SPI at 5, 9 and 12 feet bgs using a clean, stainless steel .sampling tube fitted with four, p <br /> 1-inch diameter, clean brass sleeves. Prior to each sample collection, the sampling tube was cleaned <br /> ina solution of non-phosphate detergent and potable water then double-rinsed with potable water. <br /> During sampling, the soil.probe tip was retracted and the sampling tube was driven into native soil. <br /> The bottom-most tube was prepared for shipment to the laboratory and the remaining tubes were <br /> discarded. During the first attempt to collect a groundwater sample from SPI, a sufficient quantity of <br /> groundwater could not be retrieved within a reasonable period of time (approximately one hour) using <br /> the available sampling equipment for a 1.125 diameter hole. Therefore, SP I was re=installed using a <br /> 2-inch O.D. continuous coring tool. <br /> i <br /> SP2, SP3 and SP4 were continuously cored in four foot sections from the ground surface to <br /> the total depth of approximately 16 feet bgs. Prior to coring, the coring tool was cleaned as described <br /> in 'the preceding paragraph. The coring tool was then fitted with a new, disposable polyethylene- <br /> n <br /> LJ CONDOR ! <br /> i <br /> I <br />
