Di Salvo Truck Lines-SIR
March 9, 1995
`, Page-8-
L approximately 10 inches bgs to at least 16 feet bgs consisted of generally dark gray to moderately
yellowish brown, organic clay. Approximatley 5% to 20% very fine sand was present from a depth of 8
Lfeet to 16 feet bgs in SPI and SP2 located east of the former tank locations. Trace amounts of very fine
sand were present from 4 feet to 9 feet bgs in SP3 located north of the former tank locations.
Laboratory analyses of soil samples SP2-6 and SP2-12 detected TEX constituents at concentrations
ranging from 150 gg/kg to 320 gg/kg and diesel at concentrations ranging from 1,600 mg/kg to 5,800
mg/kg. Diesel was detected in SP3-6, SP3-12, SP4-6 and SP4-12 at concentrations ranging from 5.8
mg/kg to 16 mg/kg. Benzene, kerosene and motor oil were not detected in SP2-6 and SP2-12 at or above
the reported laboratory detection limits. BTEX constituents, kerosene and motor oil were not detected at
or above the reported laboratory detection limits in the soil samples collected from SP3 and SP4. No
Yr evidence of hydrocarbon contamination was detected at or above the reported laboratory detection limits in
the soil samples collected from SP1. The reported laboratory detection limits for BTEX constituents and
L TEPH were raised in SP2 because of high hydrocarbon concentrations detected in the soil samples
collected from SP2.
L
A moderate petroleum odor was noted in SP2-6 and SP2-12 and PID readings of SP2-6 and SP2-
12 ranged from 60 ppm to 80 ppm, respectively. A slight petroleum odor was noted in SP4-12 and the
PID indicated 1 ppm hydrocarbon gases. No hydrocarbon odors or PID readings were noted in core
samples collected from immediately above the capillary zone in SP1, SP3 and SP4 or in the core samples
collected from the capillary zone in SPI and SP3.
V
The rate of groundwater recharge into each soil probe was very slow. Groundwater samples were
4 collected from SPI, SP2, and SP4; however, SP3 did not effectively recharge and a groundwater sample
+ was not collected. Laboratory analyses of groundwater samples collected from SP2 and SP4 detected
LBTEX constituents at concentrations ranging from ND to 5.0 gg/I and diesel at concentrations ranging
from 350 mg/l to 520 mg/l. A sheen was noted on the groundwater samples collected from SP2 and SP4.
Diesel was detected in SPI at a concentration of 18 mg/l. A sheen was not noted on the groundwater
V
samples collected from SPI or in the trace amount of groundwater purged from SP3. The laboratory
L detection limits requested by SJCPHS,EHD, on the day of field work, were raised because of elevated
hydrocarbon concentrations in the groundwater samples. Kerosene and motor oil were not detected at or
tr =
L ` CONDOR
