16 October 2001
AGE-NC Project No. 01-0871
or fine sand to a depth of approximately 20 feet bsg, and an orange brown to orange green silty fine
sand below 20 feet bsg.
A moderate to strong petroleum hydrocarbon odor was noted in soil samples collected from probe
boring P-3 at depths between 20 feet bsg and 25 feet bsg;a weak to moderate petroleum hydrocarbon
odor was noted from a soil sample collected at 30 feet bsg. Using a photo-ionization detector(PID),
organic vapor was detected in the soil samples from boring P-3 at concentrations as high as 14 parts
per million (the soil sample at 20 feet bsg).
Petroleum hydrocarbon odor was not observed or detected using a PID in the soil samples collected
from soil boring P-3 at 5 feet, 10 feet and 15 feet bsg, or in any of the soil samples collected from
borings P-1 and P-2.
4.2 ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL SAMPLES
A total of five soil samples were submitted to a DHS-certified laboratory(CalTech Environmental
Laboratories Inc.) for analysis of TPH-g, BTEX and MTBE, and lead.
Petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the soil samples collected at depths of 20 feet, 25 feet and
30 feet bsg from boring location P-3. TPH-g was detected in the three samples at concentrations
ranging from 0.23 to 028 milligrams/kilogram (mg/kg). BTEX compounds (0.02 mg/kg toluene,
0.006 mg/kg ethylbenzene and 0.026 mg/kg xylenes) were detected only in the 30-foot bsg sample.
MTBE was not detected in any of the samples analyzed.
The lead concentrations, ranging from 33 to 45 mg/kg, fell within the range of background
concentrations for lead (12 to 97 mg/kg) in California soils and well below the total threshold limit
concentrations (TTLC) for hazardous waste established by California.
Analytical results of soil samples are summarized in Tables 1 and 2. Copies of the laboratory report
(CalTech Environmental Laboratories Inc. Lab I.D. Nos. 0110-048-1 to 0110-048-5) and chain-of-
custody form are included in Appendix A.
5.0. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The depth to groundwater at the property is estimated to be between 95 to 100 feet below surface
grade (bsg). Based upon data collected on 09 October 2001, AGE concludes the following:
• MTBE was not detected in the soil samples collected in the area of the three former USTs.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
