Our office is working in conjunction with the
Department of Health Services and the Environmental Protection Agency to
determine whether the practices at the Marley Cooling Tower Company (MCTC)
site have resulted in contamination of the surrounding environment.
Our Board is primarily responsible for the protection of both surface and
ground water quality. The primary chemicals we are concerned about at the
MCTC site are arsenic, copper, and chromium. Preliminary results of our
investigation indicates there is some degree of. on-site contamination of the
soils and ground water directly under the site. However, the results also
show no off-site contamination occurring thus far. In fact, all off-site
ground water analyses results obtained to date are well within safe drinking
water levels. Off-site wells will continue to be monitored until we are
certain the threat of contamination no longer exists.
Any concerns regarding the health effects, as a result of exposure to any of
the chemicals used at the MCTC facility, should be addressed to the Department
of Health Services. They have the expertise necessary to evaluate all
potential health risks.
MCTC, with the approval of the Department of Health Services and the Environ-
mental Protection Agency, will soon be implementing a Community Relations
Plan under which the residents and concerned parties will be informed of
significant impacts and developments concerning the MCTC investigation.
If you should require additional information, please call me at (916) 322-1604.
J U
ROBERT E.
