6.3.2.4 Asphalt Surfacing
•
Once remediation of the shop site is complete, the originally paved areas
will be repaved with 3 inches of asphalt over and 8 inch compacted soil base.
6.3.3 Altgrnativ-e S - Excavation to 1000 ppm (Accessible) with Landfarming
The remedial action alternatives which specify excavation of accessible
soils will not include demolition of the maintenance shop. Instead, sheet
piling will be driven in parallel to the walls to prevent undermining the
building foundation. In this case, soils with 1000 ppm TPH or greater outside
the building footprint will be excavated and landfarmed on-site.
6.3.3.1 Sheet Piling Installation
Sheet piling is large corrugated interlocking steel reinforcements that
can be used to support vertical walls of excavations. The piling is driven
using an ordinary pile driver to the desired depth before excavation begins,
and the interlocking sheets can be used to support the foundation of the
entire building. The pilings must be located as close as possible to the
foundation to maximize the amount of removable contaminated soil.
6.3.3.2 Earth Moving
Excavation at the former AFPC site will be performed with standard
construction equipment. Approximately 18200 cu yds of uncontaminated soil
overburden will be removed with backhoe and bulldozer and segregated for later
replacement. Approximately 5700 cu yds of contaminated soil will be excavated
using a backhoe. k loader will then either load the material into trucks or
transport the material directly to the landfarming area, depending on the
distance to the available on-site location.
6-12
BS/0204b
