When the contaminated soil has been removed, a second excavation will be
used to generate fill for the first excavation to allow immediate closure and
paving of the site. This clean fill and the clean soil from over the
contaminated soil will then be returned to the first excavation, graded, and
packed.
6.3.3.3 Landfarming
Landfarming includes treating soils with nutrients and water in order to
promote the natural aerobic bacterial degradation of hydrocarbon contaminants
in the soil. Landfarming includes treating soils with nutrients and water in
order to promote the natural aerobic bacterial degradation of hydrocarbon
contaminants in the soil. Landfarming at the site will be carried out on
several acres of available space where the total amount of diesel containing
soil can be laid out in an even 1-foot thick layer.
To prepare the location for the landfarming operation, existing fine
silty/clayey soils will be used to create a one-foot thick cap over the entire
landfarming surface to prevent infiltration of the water used to promote
bacterial growth. The contaminated soils will be placed on this pad, disked
biweekly, watered, and allowed to aerate for several months. The surface of
the soil will be watered as necessary to moisten the soil and prevent
excessive particulate emissions.
The soil will be tested monthly for TPH diesel concentrations, and once
the concentrations are below 100 ppm diesel, the soil will be used for clean
fill on site. After remediation is complete the pad will be tested to detect
if contaminants have leached into the pad. In any event the pad itself will
be disked and otherwise treated to return it to its original service.
6-13
BS/0204b
