CLOSURE REQUEST REPORT Section No 3 0 <br /> Former American Forest Products Company 07/31/01 <br /> 2801 West Lane Page 3-1 <br /> Stockton,California <br /> 3.0 SITE CHARACTERISTICS <br /> Thus section provides a summary of conditions at the site Included are discussions of site physiography <br /> and land use, site geology and,hydrogeology, and groundwater use in the vicinity of the site based on a <br /> survey of nearby wells <br /> 31 SITE DESCRIPTION AND LAND USE <br /> The former AFPC facility is located at 2801 West Lane, approximately 15 miles north of downtown <br /> Stockton, California (Figure 1) The former AFPC facility covers approximately 40 acres (Figure 2) <br /> This Closure Request Report is restricted in scope to the area of two former USTs, located in the extreme <br /> southern portion of the former AFPC facility (Figure 2) <br /> AFDC operated a wood manufacturing plant at the site between 1921 and 1987 In the spring of 1987, <br /> American Moulding and Millwork Company (AM&M) acquired the AFPC Stockton site and currently <br /> maintains similar operations A maintenance shop was located at the site in the southern end of the <br /> facility until its demolition in 1990 (Figure 3) The maintenance shop was used for storage of plumbing <br /> and electrical parts required for building maintenance Forklifts and motor vehicles were also serviced <br /> and refueled at the maintenance shop,thus requiring fuel storage and pump islands nearby <br /> According to old site plans, three USTs were located in the vicinity of the maintenance shop A 10,000- <br /> gallon UST and pump island were located on the western side of the building A 500-gallon UST, used <br /> for the storage of waste il, was located on the eastern side of the maintenance shop According to plant <br /> personnel, a 325-gallon underground gasoline or diesel tank also existed on the northern side of the <br /> building but was evidently removed owFl eve no record f the removal were kept The ages of the <br /> tanks are not known, although plant personnel believed the tanks were installed prior to 1960 This <br /> closure report is focused on impacts apparently derived from the 10,000- and 500-gallon USTs <br /> The site is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Stockton, at an elevation of approximately <br /> 17 feet above mean sea level (msl) The topography of the site and surrounding area is relatively flat, <br /> sloping gently toward the west Regional surface water drainage is towards either the Calaveras River, <br /> located north of the site or the San Joaquin River, which hes to the west of the site The primary wind <br /> direction is from the west-northwest, although seasonal variation may occur <br /> This report focuses on the investigation area adjacent to the former maintenance shop building located at <br /> the southern end of the former AFDC facility A map of the entire facility showing the investigation site, <br /> including the location of the former maintenance shop and pump island, is shown on Figure 2 The <br /> maintenance shop was a corrugated steel building with a concrete floor and was 150 feet by 60 feet The <br /> shop was constructed in 1951 The site currently is vacant, and is bordered to the east by several <br /> abandoned buildings that were used by AFPC as storage sheds for lumber and various wood <br /> manufacturing equipment and offices The area of investigation is paved with asphalt <br /> The area in the immediate vicinity of the site consists of the Stockton Rural and San Joaquin cemeteries to <br /> the west, commercial and manufacturing facilities to the north and east, and residential properties to the <br /> south The nearest residences are located along Palm and Taft Avenues approximately 120 feet to the <br /> west and south of the site The nearest residences in the direction of groundwater flow are approximately <br /> 3,500 feet to the north-northeast <br /> K 1840191afp1afp_closure_rpt doc <br /> a <br />
