Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton
Attachment A to Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton's
letter to Mr. Ron Valinoti
dated 13 October 1989
Surface Soils
Task 4 - Additional Surface Soil Samoling
To further define the areas with DDT in excess of the TTLC, 12 shallow
surface soil samples will be collected from the areas near the warehouse
building at the approximate locations shown of Figure WP-2. Samples will
be collected in clean brass liners using a hand trowel to pack soil into
the liner. The ends of the liners will be covered with a Teflon sheet
and tight-fitting plastic cap. The caps will be secured with duct tape
to prevent slippage during shipping. Samples will be labeled as to date,
sample location, time, and initials of collector and shipped with
completed chain-of-custody forms to Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton's Laboratory
Division in San Francisco or another state certified laboratory for DDT
analysis. The analysis will be performed using EPA method 8080 for
determination of organochlorine pesticides.
Task 5 Disposal of Soils Containing DDT at a Class I Landfill
Soils with DDT concentration greater than 1 mg/Kg will be excavated to a
minimum depth of 6-inches. The approximate area within the fenced
portion of the yard to be excavated is shown on Figure WP-3. The area
outside of the fenced portion of the yard to be excavated will be
determined based on the results of the surface soil sampling conducted
during Task 4.
Construction activities will be conducted in a manner to minimize
resuspended dust. Fugitive dust will be controlled using water when
necessary. The excavated soil will be loaded into certified hazardous
waste transport vehicles and transported to an appropriately permitted
disposal facility. Soil shipments will be properly manifested.
Prior to backfilling the excavation, a composite soil sample will be
collected and analyzed for DDT to confirm that soils with DDT
concentrations exceeding 1 mg/Kg have been removed. Soils will be
collected using a pre-cleaned hand trowel or shovel and packed into a
brass liner. The liner will be covered on each end with a Teflon sheet
and plastic cap. The cap will be secured to the liner with duct tape.
The samples will be labeled and placed in a chilled ice chest with chain-
of-custody forms and shipped to the Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton Laboratory
Division in San Francisco for analysis.
WPNMLI:STOCKTON.WP2 A - 7
