i
i
Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton
i
Organic vapors were not detected above one part per million in the head
space of the soil samples collected from the excavation sidewalls or
bottom.
Three soil samples (T-1, T-2, and T-3) were collected from excavated
' soil after the tank was removed. Samples T-1 and T-2 were collected
from native soil , approximately i to 2 feet below the tank excavation
bottom, at both ends of the excavation. These samples were collected by
' hand-driving brass liners into soil located in the backhoe bucket. Fill
material excavated during the collection of samples T-1 and T-2 was
stockpiled adjacent to the excavation Composite sample T-3 was
collected from soil stockpiled during tank uncovering and tank removal .
' Sample T-3 was collected by hand digging into the soil approximately six
inches with a plastic scoop and packing the soil into a brass liner.
Stockpiled soil packed in the liner was collected from several locations
' on the pile to obtain a composite sample. After a sample was collected,
each end of the brass liner was covered with a Teflon sheet and a
plastic end cap. All samples were labeled as to sample number, sample
location, date, collector and sample depth. The labeled samples were
placed in a chilled ice chest along with Chain-of-Custody forms for
transport to the Canonie Environmental Laboratory in Stockton, Califor-
nia. Laboratory analyses were performed on a 48-hour turnaround basis
' to expedite backfilling the excavation
The approximate location of the tank excavation and stockpiled soil is
shown on Figure 10. The approximate locations of the soil samples
collected from the tank excavation are shown on Figure 11 Laboratory
reports are included in Appendix A, Part 4. A summary of laboratory
' results is presented below.
Laboratory Analyses Results
' Soil samples T-1 and T-2 were analyzed for the following constituents:
Constituent Method
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons -
Diesel (TPH) EPA 8015
' Purgeable Aromatics - Benzene,
Xylenes, Toluene, and Ethyl-
benzene (BXTE) EPA 8020
Sample T-3 was preserved until the results of analyses for T-1 and T-2
' were received.
' Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons and BXT&E were not detected above method
detection limits in samples T-1 and T-2. Based upon the non-detect
readings, sample T-3 from the stockpiled soil was not analyzed. The
results of laboratory analyses were discussed with Ms. Kasey Folley of
the San Joaquin Local Health District on 4 May 1990. Ms. Folley agreed
that the laboratory results indicate that the tank had not leaked and
that the tank excavation could be backfilled
' WPI13 3.4 882526 01
