Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton <br /> SECTION 1 <br /> ' SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS FACILITY INVESTIGATIONS <br /> ' BACKGRO€3ND <br /> The Cal -Farm Supply Stockton Facility (facility) is located at 1922 and <br /> ' 2040 West Washington Street in Stockton, California (APN 145-030-004,and <br /> 145-061-001, respectively) The location of the facility is shown on <br /> Figure 1 . The facility is comprised of two areas. The first area <br /> includes a warehouse and fenced sales yard. The second area is an open <br /> ' field located to the south and to the east of the yard (see Figure 2) <br /> According to former Cal -Farm employees, the warehouse andSales yard <br /> were used for the temporary storage, sale, and distribution of <br /> ' pesticides, fertilizers, and agricultural equipment (barbed wire, <br /> fencing materials, etc.) The sales yard also contained a 1,000-gallon <br /> underground diesel fuel storage tank, and three storage trailers The <br /> ' trailers were reportedly used to store unused quantities of pesticides. <br /> The location of the underground tank and the storage trailers are shown <br /> on Figure 3. <br /> ' Prior to the EPA ban on the use of DDT, a portion of the warehouse was <br /> reportedly used for the dilution of bulk DDT to an application strength <br /> mixture. Bulk DDT was reportedly delivered to the site in a <br /> concentrated form and was diluted or cut with an inert material It was <br /> reported that the standard operation for cleaning the formulation room <br /> floor was to sweep the excess DDT out of the southern door of the <br /> ' warehouse. According to a former Cal -Farm employee, the warehouse and <br /> sales yard have not been in use since 1985. <br /> PRELIMINARY SITE INVESTIGATION <br /> 1 In September 1988, Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton was retained by the Bankruptcy <br /> Trustee for Cal -Farm Supply to perform a preliminary site investigation <br /> of the warehouse and sales yard Previous sampling conducted by Roy F. <br /> Weston, Inc indicated that nitrates and total petroleum hydrocarbons <br /> were present in shallow (one to three feet deep) soil In addition, <br /> elevated concentrations of these chemicals were detected in a reconnais- <br /> sance groundwater sample A work plan to evaluate the possible presence <br /> of a source of nitrates and petroleum hydrocarbons 4ithin the sales yard <br /> was prepared by Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton. The Department of Health <br /> ' Services reviewed the work plan at the request of the San Joaquin Local <br /> Health District and recommended that analysis of surface soil samples <br /> for pesticides be added to the investigation. <br /> ' The preliminary site investigation was conducted during April and May of <br /> 1989. The results of this investigation are summarized in our report <br /> entitled Preliminary Site Investigation Report, Cal -Farm Supply Stockton <br /> Facility, dated 14 July 1989 The investigation included the following- <br /> ' WPI13 1.1 882526 01 <br />
