Kennedy/Jenks/Chiltan
 Mr. Charles Whitworth
i Cal-Farm Supply
I4 July 1989
Page 10
Chlorinated Herbicides- Chlorinated herbicides were not detected in surface
soil samples. However, the pesticide 2,4-D was detected in the two wipe
samples collected from the floor of the warehouse building. Concentrations of
22 ug/100cm2 and 1 .7 ug/100cm2 were reported in samples WS-1 and WS-2
respectively.
Oraananhosphorus Pesticides: The organophosphorus pesticides demeton-s,
demeton-o, diazinon, d}sulforon, methyl parathion, malathion, ethyl parathion,
ethion, and guthion were not detected in surface soil samples or surface wipe
samples collected and analyzed during this investigation.
t
Carbamates and Urea Pesticides. Carbamates and urea pesticides were not
detected in any of the surface soils or wipe samples.
Dioxin. Analysis for the 2,3,7,8-TCDD (dioxin) isomer indicated that
concentrations above the method detection limits were not present in either of
the two surface soils (SS-11 and SS-12) and the two wipe samples analyzed.
Detection limits for dioxin ranged from 0.022 ug/Kg to 0.047 ug/Kg for soils
*• and 0.00018 ug/wipe to 0.00029 ug/wipe for wipe samples.
FINDINGS
The intent of the investigation was to determine whether a source area for
nitrates and hydrocarbons previously detected in a groundwater reconnaissance
sample collected at the site is present on the site, to determine the contents
I of the storage trailers, and to determine if residual pesticides were present
in soils throughout the yard or the warehouse building. The concentrations of
nitrate detected in a previous investigation were not duplicated during the
current investigation, nor was a source of nitrates determined in the soils.
One groundwater sample was found to contain nitrate above drinking water
standards, however, as explained below, the source of this nitrate appears to
be offsite. The extensive suite of pesticide analyses conducted on soils and
wipe samples indicated that the only pesticides detected at concentrations
above potentially relevant criteria were 4,4'-DDT and Endosulfan I in soils.
An underground storage tank which appears to have leaked was also identified
i at the site. Two of the storage trailers were found to be empty, the other
contained pesticides in their original containers. A detailed description of
these findings follows
I
t
1
I
i
1
r
