i
Kennedy/Jenks/Chefton
 Mr. Charles Whitworth
Cal-Farm Supply
- 14 July 2989
Page 9
Surface Soil and Wine Samples
Nitrates: Concentrations of nitrate at a level recorded in the Roy F. Weston,
Inc. report or at a higher range indicative of a source area were not found in
soils in the storage yard. Only low concentrations of nitrates were detected
in surface soil samples collected from the storage yard within the fenced
boundary. Nitrate concentrations ranged from a low of 3.2 mg/Kg as nitrogen
in sample SS-13 to a high of 30 mg/Kg as nitrogen in sample SS-11.
Organochlorine pesticides: Seven of the 20 organochlorine pesticides included
r in the analyses were detected in surface soils collected from the storage
yard. Organochlorine pesticides were not detected in surface wipe samples
collected from the floor of the warehouse building. The concentrations of
this class of pesticides which were detected are provided in Table 6. DDT
concentrations exceeding its TTLC value were recorded for several samples.
One sample contained Endosulfan I above the soil criteria calculated using the
oral rate LO a. The range of concentrations of the organochlorine pesticides
that were detected are listed below
Compound Range of Concentrations
Detected (ug/Kg)
Alpha BHC <12.5 to 100
Endosulfan I <12.5 to 1,200
Endosulfan II <12.5 to 310
4,4' - DUE 32 to 39,000
4,4' - DUD 67 to 60,000
I 4,4' - DDT 96 to 190,000
Methoxychlor 25 to 1,900
The high concentration of pesticides in the extract from some of the samples
required dilution of the extract as per EPA laboratory protocol This
J resulted in higher detection limits for the other compounds analyzed in the
extract
Triazine Pesticides: The surface soils and wipe samples were analyzed for
nine triazine pesticides. Of these, only three were detected. Simazlne was
detected at a concentration of 51 ug/Kg in soil sample SS-4, atrazine was
detected in soil sample SS-6 at a concentration of 6.1 ug/Kg, and propazine
-- was detected at a concentration of 0 1 ug/100cm2 in the wipe sample WS-1. The
other triazine pesticides were not detected above the method detection limits
in the surface soils or wipe sample analyzed. Concentrations of triazene
pesticides detected were well below the calculated soil criteria.
j
