4.9 CULTURAL RESOURCES
Results of the field survey revealed information regarding the extent of the sites previously recorded.
No boundaries were found to separate the five sites between Tracy Lakes recorded by previous
researchers. These sites, specifically known as SJO-11, -13,-15,-47,and-0147 were determined to be
one large village complex, 11/5/91-1 or the "lake site." Three sites recorded previously on the northern
bank of the Mokelumne River in the southern half of the property,specifically SJO-43,-44,and-45 were
also determined to be one complex,probably the village of Seuamne, 10/31/91-1. Site SJO-42, located
near the southern boundary outside the project area,probably also comprises part of this complex,known
temporarily as the "river site."
One large house pit and several smaller depressions with an extensive surface deposit of shell were
identified on the northwestern half of the property,approximately midway between the water sources.
Five additional house pits, two large and three small, were located and mapped on the island in South
Tracy Lake. A chipped stone ball was found at the lower end of the slope between these depressions
and the lake; it was not collected.
In addition, a site comprised of at least three structural depressions with
associated midden was found on the eastern shores of Tracy Lakes.
Two sites have been recorded south of the river and the project site. Site SJO-46 has been mapped in
close proximity to the truck haul route. The extent and value of this site as a cultural resource is
unknown. The potential exists for this site to be as large as those identified on the north side of the
Mokelumne River.
National Register Eligibility
Specific aspects of the cultural resources found at the Tracy Lakes Complex include their integrity,
uniqueness and research value, in addition to Native American concerns (refer to Appendix G). Based
upon the information already at hand,this complex of sites should be eligible for inclusion to the National
Register due to their postulated age, size, surface integrity, setting and implications of their
interrelationship.
Historic Cultural Resources
The following are historical features recorded during for the project site:
• A corral complex including a windmill (ca. 1940)and an associated water tank with cattle trough;
• an historic levee known to have been built by San Quentin convicts;
• a lake drainage system consisting of two ditches and associated features at Tracy Lakes;
4.9-6
