4.9 CULTURAL RESOURCES <br /> All sewage leach fields must avoid the area of high archaeological sensitivity. <br /> 4.9-1(b) Native American (Miwok) concerns shall be addressed, and any development undertaken <br /> shall be done with their consultation. An ethnographer should determine the relationship + <br /> between these sites and Miwok oral and traditional history. <br /> 4.9-1(c) A qualified archaeological monitor with the following requirements must be present during <br /> all land altering or excavation activities. <br /> • Shall have at a minimum a B.A. or equivalent and one year field experience, and <br /> answer to a professional archaeologist. <br /> • Shall be independent of any Native American monitor present. <br /> • Shall have the authority to stop construction activity within 10 meters of any cultural <br /> material uncovered until thatfind has been adequately mitigated to his satisfaction, or <br /> the project redesigned. Uncovered material could be excavated, photographed or <br /> removed at the monitor's discretion. <br /> 4.9-1(d) Prior to further land disturbance, recommendations for further studies (Phase II)'should <br /> include, but not be limited to, the following: <br /> • Known sites must be mapped by professional surveyor and a qualified archaeologist. <br /> • All existing collections must be analyzed, photographed, correlated and if possible, <br /> collected in one place. <br /> • Known sites must be tested to determine the extent and type of contents, plus depth, <br /> integrity, age, and intrasite patterning (e.g. in depth, horizontal extent and artifact <br /> density), as follows: <br /> C <br /> - For the twe three newly recorded habitation sites ,(CA- <br /> SJO-0237, -0238, -0240), at least eight one-by two-meter test units in each should <br /> be excavated to the sterile level (approximately two meters); at least 20 obsidian <br /> hydration samples and at least five carbon-14 samples should be datedfor each test <br /> unit. <br /> 1 Testing of a known or suspected site to determine its size, depth, integrity, age and <br /> significance. <br /> 4.9-12 <br />
