i
4.9 CULTURAL RESOURCES
- For the lake site (414194 1),(CA-SJO-0011), at least 20 one- by two-meter test
units should be excavated until a sterile level is reached (approximately three
meters); at least 30 obsidian samples and at least 10 carbon-14 samples should be
dated for each test unit.
- For the river site (19, 1-1) (CA-SJO-0043), at least 10 one-by two-meter test
units should be excavated to a level of sterility (approximately three meters); at
least 25 obsidian samples and at least eight samples of carbon-14 should be dated
for each test unit.
- Recordation, including mapping and photography, should follow (at minimum) the
standard procedures of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Pollen and soil analyses representative of each site locality should be performed,
dependent upon the material available.
• The analysis and publication of the results of the tests above must be adequatelyfunded
by the developer.
4.9-1(e) The river site "^'T)(CA-SJO-0043) extends beyond the project area to the east.
San Joaquin County personnel should take note of this if the area is to be developed
beyond its historic farming use.
4.9-1(f) A survey of the proposed access road south of the river should be completed to avoid
impact to the two sites previously recorded in the vicinity.
Impact
4.9-2 Development of the site would increase access to the sites resulting in increased
vandalism of the cultural resources. Housing and recreation maintenance activities
would likely result in degradation of this complex with the relocation, repair or addition
of subsurface utility and sewage lines, and by the soil compaction and irrigation of golf
and equestrian activities.
Mitigation
4.9-2(a) All areas that are considered of high archaeological sensitivity should be under the
protection of a third party professional organization.
4.9-2(b) All areas of high sensitivity should be fenced during construction activities.
4.9-13
