Previous land owner, Mr. Angelo Brovelli, stated that avocationalists and students from UCB
conducted excavations in the 1940s (Personal Communication 1992). Cook and Heizer (1951)
make reference to an excavation of 12 samples to 1 ft. depths that occurred at CA-SJO in
1949. They report an average of 15 artifacts (items of obsidian, bone, pigment, stone, glass,
or clay) yielded per cubic meter excavated.
Three additional sites within the Buckeye Ranch boundaries (CA-SJO were
recorded in 1949. Site CA-SJO recorded by UC Field Parties, were described as
located on the rim of Tracy Lake, and characterized as campsites containing baked clay objects.
CA-SJO• was recorded by G.L. Grosscup (1949). He described this site as an occupation
site in which he observed baked clay and some old holes from previous excavation. Map 4
indicates the current plottings of these three site on the basemap
Site CA-SJO was probably recorded in 1949 as well. However, the site record is extremely
sketchy, neglecting to identify either the recorder, the date, or the nature of the site (see Map 4).
Another surge of archaeological activity occurred in the 1970s. CA-SJO was rerecorded
by F.-A. Riddell (1970). It is described as a large habitation site, possibly representing a major
late prehistoric village for the region, although no artifacts were observed. Although Riddell
notes that it is located on a point of land at the south end of [Tracy Lake], he remarks that
Grosscup's (1949) original placement of this site on Tracy Lake is erroneous. In 1977, an
employee of the CCIC with the initials JM, added a description to the site record placing it
400 ft. northeast of the Mokelumne River and ft. south of an inlet on the south shore of
Tracy Lake.
In the spring of 1971, a field class from the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS)
spent some time surveying the area and surface collecting cultural materials. Field notes and
materials, compiled by Beck (1971), are archived at the Department.of Anthropology at CSUS.
7
