During the years 1973-75, amateur archaeologist Don McGeein conducted excavations in a
location which appears to be between sites CA-SJG He excavated 20 units (5 ft. by
5 ft.) to a maximum depth of 69 inches. During these excavations, he exhumed 12 burials with
associated grave lots. The grave lots, photographs, and burial records were donated to the
Anthropology Department at UCB. Human remains were reinterred at the site.
Another amateur archaeologist, Marie Moyers (Personal Communication 1992), conducted
excavations in the area during the 1960s and 70s. She donated the bulk of her collection to the
City of Tracy Elementary School District.
2.3.2 Recent Investigation by Mills & Associates
The SJCCDD, in planning for the proposed development project, contracted with Mills &
Associates to prepare a Draft EIR. Subconsultants Benjamin Ananian and Carolyn Rice,
conducted an archaeological field investigation in 1991, to identify, locate or relocate, and
record all cultural resources in the project area, as well as to determine the impacts to these
resources and define mitigation measures.
Ananian and Rice (1991) conducted an intensive reconnaissance of the project area, walldng
linear transects spaced at intervals of 10-20 m to ensure full-coverage. Their field work resulted
in the identification of historic sites (CA-SJO- _
including historic borrow pits, a ditch, levee, and cattlelcorral complex. Further, they identified
four prehistoric sites: (1) the "Lake Site"—this site subsumed previously recorded sites (CA-
SJO- _ as one large village site, as no boundaries were found to separate
these : sites; (2) the "River Site"—this site subsumed previously recorded site (CA-SJO-
as the probable ethnographic village of Seuamne; (3) newly recorded site CA-SJO-
(temporarily designated and (4) newly recorded site CA-SJG (temporarily
designated ' An additional prehistoric site, CA-SJ4 was recorded by Rice
(1992). The locations of these newly recorded and rerecorded sites are indicated on Map 5.
9
