Stops were made throughout the project
at the location of several suspected archaeological sites , and
many house pits and some midden deposits were observed. The
location of previously recorded archaeological site
and at least a portion of - ...were observed and the
location of the was
visited.
It was evident that considerable disturbance .of the landscape had
occurred in the past in and around much of Brovelli Woods ,
including washouts from past flooding of the Mokelumne River and
perhaps from Jahant Slough, and the use of many areas for borrow
to build levees . The location of the proposed Club House and
Lots 19-21 were one area that were singled out for visitation to
see if any obvious evidence of cultural resources were present .
The surface of the ground among the remaining oaks and buckeye on
these lots was very irregular. appeared to have been pushed
around with a bulldozer or some other type of equipment at some
time previous to the current owners acquisition of tha property.
Some depressions were noted that were generally circular in
outline and in some cases appear to be where tree stumps mi ht
have been pushed out since what appeared to be evidence of heavy
equipment activity led up to and in some cases into some of the
depressions . The deposit had definitely been disturbed in the
past and evidence of a heavy growth of bull thistle . which is
often indicative of heavy ground disturbance, was present in a
portion of this location.
The disturbance to the deposit at the location ofprehistoric
included evidence of the removal of a substantial
portion of the midden in the past and its use in the construction
of a levee. In 1970 Riddell noted that the area was used for
borrow at one time and that Grosscup in 1949 indicated that some
old holes were in the deposit . A large circular depression on
the surface of the site may be remnants of a structure. though
neither of the previous archaeologists who visited the site noted
any house pits or other features . when visited on March 13 , 1992
Dwight Dutschke indicated the depression resembled those
associated with ceremonial structures . This site has apparently
been heavily vandalized in the past .
The location of _ in the portion of th
project did have evidence of prehistorically derived cultural
materials but not in any- great abundance . Since Dawson. who
first recorded this site and nearby which
are outside of the Project , chose to test only tae two other
sites and not it apparently was not considered to have
the potential to yieta burials and large numbers of artifacts .
Of ail of the cultural resources identified by the consulting
archaeologists the area defined by them on their site record for
the "RIVER SITE" portion within the project boundaries comes the
closest to the actual limits of a site deposit .
At the location of the proposed Tracy Lake
house pits were observed, a well defined miaden , flecks of shell ,
obsidian.. and fragments of baked clay cooking balls . The
consulting archaeologists identify this as their site
and indicate a boundary on page four of the site recora aetinem
by the " limit of scatter" .
