Hazelton Ave. p <br /> Stockton, CA 95205 <br /> Dear Ms. Sullivan: <br /> Thank you for the opportunity to offer comments on the Draft <br /> Environmental Impact Report for the Buckeye Ranch Development. In <br /> reviewing the document, we found ourselves with a number of <br /> questions yet unanswered and many conflicts to be resolved. <br /> It is clear that if we had the ideal situation that we would view <br /> the resources found within and outside the project boundaries as a <br /> cultural complex. An area where Native people choose to live, <br /> . raise their families, practice their religion and conduct other <br /> important aspects of their life. But this is not an ideal <br /> situation. Rather, we need to only look at the surrounding land <br /> parcels to note that as a result of agriculture and residential <br /> development, that the environment has been heavily modified in <br /> response to the changing needs of society. What remains is an <br /> island which contains some very important aspects of our cultural <br /> heritage. <br /> We believe that what remains were left by one of the Maximos. The <br /> Maximos were an important family and Charles Maximo resided in the <br /> Ione are until the 1940 ' s when he passed away. A number of our <br /> members are related to the Maximos and this is why our interest in <br /> the project. t <br /> The proposal under consideration offers an alternative to the 1 <br /> activities which have resulted in the changes to the surrounding <br /> environment which affected other cultural heritage sites. We are <br /> pleased to note the willingness to modify the project to take into <br /> account these important remains of our past. <br /> As previously noted, we would prefer to view the area as a cultural <br /> environment and if this was a park and we were interpreting the <br /> resources to the public, we would do just that.
